to get a better look at them
Electron Microscope
Compound Light Microscope
The difference is that a electron microscope uses electrons to magnify the cells and other organisms and a compound light microscope uses light to magnify objects. An electron microscope is much more expensive, but they do magnify better. Even some of the most science based colleges only have 2 or 3 of these superior microscopes. (That proves how expensive they are.) In my science class we use compound light microscopes.
