Robert Hooke
He was the first person to examine cells. He looked at feathers, fish scales, the eyes of house flies, living plant cells, and cork cells too and all with his hand made microscope.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
He made his own microscopes. He looked at pond scum and found small single-celled organisms, he looked at animal blood too. He realized that lots of different animals (including humans) have different shapes of cells. He was the first person to see bacteria. And he discovered that yeasts are single-celled organisms.
Matthias Schleiden
He studied plants. He concluded that all plant parts were made up of cells.
Theodor Schwann
He concluded that all animal tissues were made up of cells. He also wrote the first two parts of the cell theory.
* All organisms are made up of one or more cells
* The cell is the basic unit of all living things
* All organisms are made up of one or more cells
* The cell is the basic unit of all living things
Rudolf Virchow
He added the third part of the cell theory,
* All cells come from existing cells
* All cells come from existing cells
